Indian summer

October 9th, 2008

Today at lunch I took the dog for our usual 20 minute walk. The sky is perfect, cloudless blue, the trees are changing, the air is…warm? Yes, indeed. Though it’s not hot, it’s in the 60s and warm. It’s indian summer – my favorite time of year.

It’s the time of year to savor wraps, hot cider, walks in the woods, sweaters, a warm scarf, corduroys, turtlenecks, the scent of woodsmoke in the air. Oh it’s beautiful! I’m sewing a cool funky messenger diaper bag this weekend, after I draft the pattern in Illustrator, I’ll cut out the cape and lining and prepare to work on that next weekend. It’s a good time of year.

The toddler will play in a big pile of leaves for the first time, she’ll wear cozy sweaters and cute hats, I’ll push her in swings at parks that are ringed with trees ablaze with color.

Why did yesterday afternoon’s baby nap recharge me? I had decaf, a luxury for me. I sketched, I had a creative idea, it wasn’t all just idle surfing. I had a purpose. And I felt, well, recharged, able to handle her all evening!

As I was reading my online newsletters this PM (two fave local boutiques) one had a mention of not your daughter’s jeans. I hope not! She’s 18 months old~ And I am an old mama at 39. But that’s OK. I look young, I act young, ergo…I am young!
