I’ve included seven great midi skirts to sew for spring AND even a free one! Choose one or more and get sewing.
Why sew the midi skirt for spring?
Yes, I know midi is trending right now, and for good reason for spring – it’s still chilly, so you need something covering most of your legs right now. Plus, as we move into a more recessionary period, longer skirts tend to trend. Here are seven midi skirt sewing patterns that I love – you might even have some patterns in YOUR stash to use, and I’ll share a fun hack I saw on an Italian brand’s IG for making it a color block skirt (using up some scraps!) Midi skirts are forgiving on fit, EASY to sew, a perfect beginner project, or a palate cleanser project.
A-line skirts worth sewing for spring
Two of my favorite A-line Skirts are the Fast & Fabulous a-line from Hot Patterns and the Drawstring Skirt from Hot Patterns. But also I feel I should mention the Lantern Skirt and the colorblock wrap skirt too. I also love the straight skirt in a knit or woven fabric from Christine Jonson Patterns (this basic pattern can be made in about 20 minutes!) It’s more of a column skirt but with a slight a-line (shown in the two skirts on the right, middle in a linen/cotton print and the other in a knit). The leftmost skirt is the HotPatterns Fast & Fabulous a-Line skirt in a poly crepe.
Check them out here at the HotPatterns store.

The great thing about an A-line skirt is you can secretly wear it as a DRESS! Yes! Just pull the skirt up and wear as a bandeau dress, either belted or not, under a casual “painter” or “chore” jacket or a denim jacket or even a cropped knit jacket. This doubles your options for travel.

Full midi skirts to Sew for Spring
I have a vintage pattern with A-line and full skirts and if you do as well, this is a great way to use those vintage patterns. Mine have both zippered and elastic waist skirts (depending on the pattern) so choose your own adventure on this one and dive into your vintage pattern stash to find one.
If you need a full skirt pattern, try these two:
Gypsum Skirt by Sew Liberated, a classic skirt with or without side panels, with pockets in either version.

You can also make a FREE tiered skirt pattern from rectangles, here is a link to the instructions and ones I made for my then toddler daughter and myself.

The skirt above, from a popular online seller, is made in linen. Use the Gypsum Skirt pattern, or any long A-line elastic waist skirt pattern you have already, and leave a side slit from above the knee to the hem. This has a 2″ elastic waist as well.
Modify your skirts with color blocking

I saw these skirts from an Italian brand from Puglia and they were so wonderful! I took some screenshots, and will share how you can recreate this from scraps from your fabric stash. Use your full skirt pattern (or A-line with drawstring waist) for this hack.
The bottom 10-12″ of these skirts are a contrast color. It’s easy to do this by tracing your skirt pattern, cutting the skirt trace at about 10-12″ from the bottom, adding 1/2″ seam allowances along the cutting line and then cutting a top part of skirt and then another of the contrast band at the bottom. In her video (her handle is shown in the pic) the skirts are:
burgundy + pink, gold + cobalt blue, periwinkle + mint, green + pink and navy + oatmeal. You can use ANY combo you like, including white+ black or black+white, black+oatmeal, teal+navy, taupe + lemon yellow.
Sew the skirt panels together at the side seams, and then match up with the body of the skirt (after sewing side seams), matching the seamlines. Then, construct the rest of the skirt as usual.
Styling a midi skirt for spring
It’s probably going to be chilly. Wear a sweater, a cropped moto jacket or jean jacket or a “Painter” (chore) jacket over your skirt and style with sneakers, chunky sandals or even boots (lug sole boots.)
I like to wear mine with graphic tee shirts, with slim turtlenecks and oversized jackets in the spring, with sneakers. As we get toward warmer spring, ballet flats are my go to with skirts.
They look equally good with a hoodie, vest and lug sole boots. Or a hoodie, vest and your favorite sneakers.
