Free sewing patterns worth your time to sew

There are a lot of free sewing patterns out there. A lot aren’t great pattern. But there are some free sewing patterns that are worth your time to sew and here’s my roundup of some basics like tops, pants, skirts, coats and jackets.

Free sewing patterns for spring summer capsule wardrobe

Right here at Sew Paradise, you can get the Greenbush top and poncho, and the August bandeau tube top for free.

The Monroe Turtleneck by SewTessuti (Australia). This one is well loved and for good reason. This relaxed fit turtleneck has a slight dropped shoulder, a mock neck and is well regarded in the sewing community.

Mood Fabrics has an entire line of sewing patterns – with edgy designs that are on trend. A few favorites here are the Ivy convertible trench coat/trench vest. Super on trend, this has a sleeve/button on that attaches the sleeves to trench coat overlay so you can wear it as a vest OR a coat. The Fennel coat is perfect for pre quilted fabrics and features a long length, front zip, raglan sleeve and collar. Make this in a fleece for the sleeves and a quilted fabric for the body. Or just sew it all in fleece! Note, Mood has the instructions usually on the website, the download is almost always just the pattern.

Two new ones for winter 2026 include an awesome faux fur vest called the Summit Fur Vest and a great front-slit midi skirt called the Peak Pencil skirt. These are both awesome patterns and worth a download. Although the skirt is designed for a woven, make this in a Ponte knit and you’ll just slip the skirt right on (no zipper needed.) Mood always comes through, and their kits that accompany the pattern make it easy to one-stop-shop.

I have a blog post about free sewing patterns for a spring and summer capsule wardrobe here.

Every major sewing pattern line offers a free pattern to try their pattern line. A recent favorite is French Navy, and their Stellan tee, a classic boxy short sleeved tee shirt for knit fabrics. Check out any one of your favorite designers to find a bunch of free patterns that you can use to round out your sewing pattern collection!
