Cozy winter capsule wardrobe to sew and thrift 2024

Here’s a cozy winter capsule wardrobe to sew & thrift for 2024. I am a hockey mom, and when I say some rinks are not above the outside temperature, I’m not kidding. Here’s what I brought and wore for a long holiday weekend hockey tournament. I wore all of these under my “big coat” a 3/4 length down coat with hood from Columbia. These are on the sporty chic side. I wouldn’t have felt weird being in a casual but nicer restaurant in the sweatercoat, cashmere turtleneck and black pants – but we ate in our hotel!

From far left, plaid reversible hood scarf. Sew News winter 2023 issue called the Over & Under Hood. I like this one for any outfit where I don’t have a hood attached (like a sweatercoat). I wear it like a scarf (there’s a V-neck front) under a blazer or cardigan. You can slip it up over your head for extra warmth.

Lands End Canvas long sweatercoat in cream, although knit and thrifted, there are sewing patterns for this style. A great pattern for this is this one from McCalls M7476 which has cardigans with bands or collars, so you can do more jacket-like or more cardigan like. Has the same V-neck look. Sew it in one of those knits that looks like cable knit sweaters, or try ribbing or even waffle knit fabric.

Secondhand Carve Designs Riley top – this is your classic pullover kangaroo pocket, big hug of a neckline top. I love the Naughty Bobbin Patterns one here – there isn’t a kangaroo pocket in this, but inset pockets – totally has that same neckline as the Riley.

Black pants with gray herringbone inserts are the ME2033 that I sewed for my first garment of 2024

Gray leggings are freecycled and are fleecy inside!

V-neck hoodie, striped was purchased new about three years ago. Similar style in a woven or knit fabric is this one: Designed for stable knits OR woven fabrics, this is your “pacific beach” hoodie – and the V-neck is that style!

The crossbody bag in black is an upcycled jeans one I got at the Fiber2Fashion Festival in East Lansing last October.

I like to add in cozy accessories – this is a handknit hat and purchased tie-in pompon, your favorite journal, neutral pink nail polish and an upcycled sailcloth bags from Seabags.
